An intern’s POV on social media.

It’s the end of my second month here at envisionit media, and I’m proud to say that as the weeks pass, the learning curve continues to become steeper than ever before.  I stated in my last post that, “I’m only at the tip of the iceberg”, and let me tell you that statement was more dead-on than I could even imagine. During my first month I learned an abundance of different media and techniques (SEM, SEO, PPC, and Social Media to name a few) that could be applied to client accounts, but through my second month here I’m really beginning to delve deeper under the water by learning how to utilize these techniques to provide maximum gain for our clients.

With that said, let me give all of you local/nationwide/global business owners out there one small tip of advice I’ve learned while interning here: Use Social Media!! Unless you’ve been living under a rock (no offense if that’s your preferred living space), you’ve probably heard about Twitter and Facebook.  So you have heard about it? (I hope so) Are you using it? (Most likely) But the real question is; HOW are you using it?  Facebook currently has 400+ million users and Twitter is at 75 million, and botH can be great for promoting your business.  But on the other hand, there are already many other businesses being social, so it can be very hard to stand out amongst the crowd.

I’m a “Gen Y” child, so I am very aware of all the new social media platforms that are available out there. I definitely use Facebook and Twitter multiple times a day. Personally, when I use these platforms I know that I’m being bombarded with advertisements, fan pages, events, apps, etc.   90% of which I see, delete, and they never cross my mind again. When I actually pay attention to any ads, pages, or apps, is when I see one that a number of my friends have previously viewed, or one that’s so new, creative, and innovative that I can’t help but want to be a part of it.

Here at envisionit, we love integrating our clients into the world of interactive and when it comes to social media (a growing piece of the proverbial pie), we can help your company with the following: target the right consumers, create exposure & awareness, create word of mouth buzz for your business, to ultimately make your business stand out amongst the “social” crowd.

  2. This brings up an interesting thing:

Social media channels like facebook and twitter do NOT and will never meet your average marketing goals. In fact, they can be time-stealing and counter-productive when it comes to ROI. Furthermore, those channels do not provide a POS which makes tracking a “sale origin” quite difficult.

With a truckload of client-side tools and with APIs that enable novice to intermediate users to “talk” to their social media service using operating-system and/or server technology, those “social media channels” have turned into “bot-to-bot” information exchange cubes, overflowing with more than just the usual “white noise” effect.

I doubt that – unless the general public transforms their information-gathering-behaviour (which boils down to a simple “search-to-find”) – there is a real future in social media all together. Data get’s lost… with every copy. At the same time, information get’s lost… in the big collection of short-messages like we have used them on our mobile phones since the 80s.

So what’s left? The hope for a better future, where interns transform and evolve… to the specialists we once evolved into.

I wish you all the fun and success in getting there. And while you’re at it, consider my 2 cents: you’re thinking good, but do yourself a favor and don’t stop there! There is a whole world out there that changes on a daily base… and the future of social media is more uncertain than the sustainability of classic print. ;)
